According to a recent Gallup Poll: “Despite the growing focus on inequality in recent years, the 63% of Americans who say that money and wealth should be more evenly distributed among a larger percentage of the people is almost the same as the 60% who said this in 1984.”
Not surprisingly, views vary by party identification and the “liberal”/”conservative” self-identification. But it does not vary as much by other factors such as age or income.
When asked if the government should redistribute income more fairly by taxing the rich more heavily, 52% said yes. This agreement has bounced around from 43% to 52% since 2000. There is more variability in responses based on the 4 demographic characteristics considered.
